Inter started this game with some of their more experienced girls absent through injury, holidays and other commitments but where able to give two new players their debut with both Caitriona Casey and Grace Roberts-White effortlessly blending into the team. The match started with both teams struggling to get control and it was the newly formed Fenit girls who created the first break on goal but the center back pairing of Orla O'Brien and Caitriona Casey covered back well to snuff out the chance. The game was evenly balanced for the opening 10 minutes with neither team dominating but Inter broke the deadlock with striker Sarah Taylor finding her way through the Fenit defence to score the opening goal. This settled Inter and they started to take control with Molly Bhamvra commanding in midfield; Fenit struggled to cope with her surging runs and the pressure eventually told with Molly winning the ball in midfield and running through the Fenit team to score. Following a knock Sarah Taylor made way for Grace Roberts-White, Inter were starting to press high up the field and the game was being played in the Fenit half but despite Katie Cronin's best efforts the Fenit defence were standing firm. The pressure finally told with a little bit of magic from Molly, Inter won the ball through the industrious Eabha O'Connor on halfway and she played the ball to Molly who ran at Fenit's left side and jinked through two girls to break in on goal finishing for her second of the day coming up to half-time. Inter were not having it all their own way with Fenit creating a number of chances but never really troubling Maja in goals. Following a Fenit attack Caitriona Casey won possession inside the Inter box, a quick one two with Rachel O'Sullivan set her free down the right wing where she sidestepped the Fenit challenge and almost set Grace free in behind the Fenit defence only for a timely interception ending what was a great flowing move. Katie Cronin came close again just after but couldn't find a way through the scrambling defenders and the half ended at 3:0.
The second half started with Molly and Katie making way for Gemma O'Brien and Sarah who formed a new center back pairing allowing Caitriona and Orla to move into midfield, Maja and Eabha exchanging roles and a new midfield three for Inter freshened things up but the change that had the greatest influence on the second half was Grace moving to right wing. Grace revelled in the space this afforded her and really started to turn up the pressure. From the off Inter looked just as dangerous in attack with Grace twice in quick succession getting in behind the Fenit fullback and baring down on goal only for her final shot to be wayward. Fenit struggled to cope with Grace and she continued to trouble, collecting the ball from deep and running in behind the Fenit defence with one such break ending with her squaring for Maja to sweep the ball into the Fenit goal for four. Inter where in the ascendancy with Orla, Caitriona and Gemma all coming close but the final goal of the game went to the girl most deserving of one with Grace yet again breaking the Fenit back line but this time making no mistakes in powering her shot to the back of the net. The match ended with a series of substitutions and positional changes which broke the rhythm of the game and resulted in no more goal chances.
Coach Thomas O'Sullivan had this to say after the game.
"There were a number of players who really stood out in this game and every player had moments where they excelled, all I have to do as a coach is increase the moments we excel in every game and training between now and the end of the season and we'll do well because the ability and talent is there.
I was so delighted to have both Caitriona and Grace make their debut today, I was confident that they'd do well but both played way beyond all reasonable expectation.
Before the game I asked my senior players to help guide the girls on the pitch as our team is still quite new playing together and Molly, Katie and Sarah did that today, they lead the way with their work rate and competitiveness. I can't speak for the younger girls but I think it must be great to have senior players to look up to and emulate, the older girls really encourage the other girls on the pitch it's great to see, I'm lucky to have some really experienced and mature girls in my team.
I have to single Molly Bhamvra out today, the impact she had on this fixture was huge, she was all action and was out there doing everything she could to win. Fenit had no answer to the questions she asked and if I had let her on the field longer I know she would have scored more goals so maybe I prevented her a hat trick so I'm sorry for that but I'm sure she'll have more chances this season.
We had two girls out injured today and I wish Orla & Cliona a speedy recovery although I must admit it's great to have the extra assistant, thanks Orla.
Thanks also to coaches Niall and Suzanne"
